Maintenance of recuperator filters: a rough estimate of the cost of negligence

 

A recuperation system is a modern and highly efficient solution for modern homes, ensuring fresh air supply and energy savings. However, even the most advanced system becomes ineffective when one of its most important parts is forgotten - air filters.

Many people think of a filter as a small thing that can be replaced “later.” However, in reality, a forgotten filter can lead to much greater financial and health costs than expected. In this article, we will examine how much such negligence really costs – not only in monetary terms, but also in quality of life.

Increased electricity consumption When the filter is clogged, air throughput is reduced and the heat recovery fans have to work harder to maintain the required air flow. Such overload means higher energy consumption.

Let's calculate: If the heat recovery unit consumes 120–150 kWh per year, then due to a clogged filter, consumption can increase by 15–25 percent, i.e. an additional 18–38 kWh. With an electricity price of about €0.30/kWh, this amounts to about €5–12 per year. And this is just one missed replacement cycle.

However, over time, this amount only increases because when the filters are clogged, the device works inefficiently all the time - day after day, month after month.

Reduced air quality – invisible, but tangible The main function of a recuperator is not only to supply air, but also to clean it from dust, pollen, soot, and bacteria. When filters are no longer replaced, they not only no longer retain these pollutants, but can also become their source.

Consequences: More dust in the air and on surfaces.

Exacerbation of allergies and respiratory problems.

Unpleasant odor, especially if the filters are exposed to moisture.

Over time, there is even a risk of mold in the ducts.

This is especially true for families with children, seniors, or more sensitive people. Poor air quality affects sleep, work performance, and overall well-being.

Possible technical damage to the device. Filters that are not cleaned or replaced late will eventually cause not only airflow problems, but also technical damage:

Overloading the fans causes bearing wear.

Dust accumulates in the heat exchanger, reducing heat transfer.

Sensors may fail, moisture condensation may occur, and there may even be a risk of short circuit.

Repair cost: Depending on the type of device, the repair cost ranges from 50 to 300 euros. In some cases, even more if the heat exchanger or main electronic components need to be replaced.

In addition, most manufacturers state that the warranty will not apply if the user has not performed basic maintenance - i.e., has not changed the filters according to the instructions.

Filter costs and losses – what do the numbers show? By changing filters on time twice a year, the total annual maintenance cost usually ranges from 30 to 50 euros. This is a small investment compared to what you may have to spend on electricity costs, repairs or health problems caused by poor air quality. Late filter changes often cost several times more.

The psychological aspect – when do you notice that something is wrong? One of the problems is that without changing the filters, the changes occur gradually, so many people simply do not notice them. Maybe at first the throat becomes a little dry, then the windows are opened more often, and finally the device starts to work noisier. Only then does the thought arise: “Maybe I need to check the filters?”.

However, by then the system may already be damaged, and air quality may have deteriorated to the point where health effects are felt.

When to change filters? General recommended frequency: twice a year – in spring and autumn.

However, in some cases (e.g., living near construction sites, heavy traffic, or working with animals), filters may need to be replaced every 3-4 months.
